Patti Smith flyttar från South Jersey till New York och är minst sagt lite vilsen. Där träffar hon Robert Mapplethorpe och de blir ett par, fast egentligen mycket mer än det. De är nån form av själsfränder och varandras musor och tillsammans kämpar de för att bli konstnärer. De bor i äckliga lägenheter tillsammans, är hungriga tillsammans och skapar tillsammans. De tar in på Chelsea Hotel och arbetar sig så sakteliga in i utkanten av kretsen kring Andy Warhol, hänger med Bob Dylans polare och sitter vid Janis Joplins knä när Kris Kristofferson för första gången spelar Me and Bobby McGee för henne. Och Jimi Hendrix klappar Patti Smith på axeln. Mapplethorpe (vars fotografier visas på Fotografiska i sommar, jävlar vad jag vill dit) snirklar sig fram mot fotokonsten och Patti Smith skriver och tecknar, innan hon blir rockstjärna också.
Det är en fantastisk historia, som hela tiden drivs framåt av vänskapen mellan Mappelthorpe och Smith. Det är en sorglig historia också. Och en mäktig who’s who över det sena sextiotalets artsyfartsy-scen i New York. Ibland, och det tänker jag beror på att jag inte förstår bättre, kan jag känna att det är lite väl pretentiöst också, fast det kan hon väl kosta på sig, Patti.
